We take bullying very seriously here at Lockwood School. Above that, we take treating each other with kindness and respect very seriously as well. It's important to teach our children empathy. The golden rule of "Treat others the way you would like to be treated" is used on a daily basis on this campus. As a counselor, I deal with bullying often. All of our students are taught that bullying is defined as: the issue has happened over and over again, the same people are involved, what happened was on purpose, it hurt body or feelings, and typically involves an imbalance of power. There are four different types of bullying: verbal, physical, social, and cyber.
How do we teach our students about bullying? Starting in October, National Anti-Bullying Month, the entire school hears the same message come across the morning announcements. The announcements for that particular month focus on defining what bullying is, ways to be an upstander instead of a bystander, what to do if you are bullied, but more importantly-to treat each other with kindness. Each month focuses on a different virtue and a variety of different topics are included throughout the year to aid in mitigating bullying: gratitude, courage, dignity, dedication, loyalty, teamwork, service, and respect. By emphasizing these character virtues, we are encouraging how to treat one another and dedicating focus to making positive anti-bullying efforts here at Lockwood School.
