It's hard to believe that we are into the new year and at the end of 2nd quarter already! It's been a busy few weeks since our return on the 5th and there a lot of great things going on.
This month's core value is dedication. The morning announcements continue to serve as a way to address the entire K-5 student body with a positive message in the morning on the importance of working hard and staying dedicated, not to mention a rundown of the day's lunch options.
K-2 Guidance remains in full swing. This month the students are learning the difference between BIG problems and little problems. BIG problems are those that make us feel unsafe or frightened. These are best to get an adult to help us solve them. Little problems are things that annoy or bother us and that we can solve on our own-with the help of Kelso's choices. Kelso is a frog that has visited each classroom. Kelso tells us that we should at least try 2 of his strategies to be our own problem solver. The hope is that students will begin to recognize the difference between little problems and big problems, and when it actually is necessary to warn an adult about something rather than tattling.
I've also used the book, A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue by Julia Cook. This has been a great resource to use to share with kids the importance of learning the tattle rules! Students have been challenged to start following the tattle rules, which include: Being a Danger Ranger, Be a Problem Solver, Now or Not Now Problem, and M.Y.O.B. (Mind Your Own Beeswax). All of them have enjoyed the story, but need reassurance that Tattle Tongue is not a REAL thing...nobody's tongue will really turn yellow or get purple spots if they tattle too much:)
Perfect attendance awards for the quarter will be handed out next week for students who were on time and here everyday, all day for 2nd quarter! Congratulations to all those who receive that award, we appreciate all their hard work and being at school everyday is important!
Kelso will be making an appearance in classrooms again next month, so stay tuned for further details!
