Wow! What a busy start to an already great school year! We are underway here at Lockwood. Students are settled in to their new grade with their new teachers and learning has begun. Students have completed their fall MAP testing and many have also started in their Walk to Read programs. There is a lot happening around here!
In accordance with National Bullying Prevention Month, our focus has been on...spreading the anti-bullying message! Morning announcements started this month, and with that, the message of what bullying is, how to be an upstander, what to do if you're being bullied, but more importantly, how to treat each other with kindness.
This month has found me visiting each classroom to meet and visit with students about what a school counselor does. What does a school counselor do? A school counselor is:
-A Problem Solver: It's my job to help students solve their problems, whether big or small, it's my job to help solve them all! My goal is to help them become their own problem solvers so that they can be the best that they can be.
-A Listener: I am a listener! It is my job to help students with their problems. Sometimes we can be upset or sad and need someone to visit with.
-A friend: Students are never in trouble when they visit with the school counselor. I want to help students make things right.
-A Helper: I want to help all students do their very BEST in school.
-A Secret Keeper: I will never tell anyone what we talk about, UNLESS, someone is going to get hurt.
Students then have the opportunity to share with me a little bit about themselves by creating a circle map (Grades 1-2). It's been fun seeing new and old faces alike!
We are gearing up for parent/teacher conferences next Thursday and Friday. As always, feel free to stop by and introduce yourself.
November will find us focusing on anti-bullying efforts in guidance, watch for more to come!
